Gruss is a minor character in Stanislaw Lem's Novel Fiasco
He studies termites.
He conducted an experiment where he killed the queen of an ant or termite mound and then observed the behaviour of termites working outside the mount. According to him they return to the nest immediately, showing agitation.
"And then—Gruss's experiment. Also not verified. He maintained that if you killed the termite queen, workers that were several hundred meters from the mound immediately showed agitation and returned to the nest."
